IAGOS
IAGOS is a European research infrastructure designed to establish, operate and maintain a global network for long-term observation of atmospheric composition: reactive trace gases (ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides), greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone), aerosols and cloud particles (water droplets and ice crystals).
IAGOS is based on the scientific and technological experience acquired during the MOZAIC (Measurement of Ozone and Water Vapour on Airbus in-service Aircraft) research project, which was funded by Europe between 1993 and 2004, and CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for the Regular investigation of the Atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container).
IAGOS, which was initiated by the JUELICH research center, CNRS, Météo-France and Airbus, produces data for the scientific community and public operators, in particular providing real-time data for air quality and weather forecasts.
These data are used by international scientific networks, international weather forecasting centers, air quality forecasting centers, the Atmospheric Service of the Copernicus program and, more broadly, by the GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) sphere.
Eventually, global coverage will be provided by a fleet of some twenty Airbus airliners belonging to international airlines and carrying IAGOS instrumentation.
