LSCE
The LSCE is a joint research unit (UMR 8212) between CEA, CNRS and the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin (UVSQ), located on two sites (CEA-Orme des Merisiers and CNRS Gif-sur-Yvette campuses). It is part of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL).
The LSCE brings together around 300 researchers, engineers and administrative staff, including 150 permanent employees from the 3 supervisory bodies and several dozen graduate students.
Since January 2015, LSCE has been organized into three scientific themes:
- Archives and Tracers
- Biogeochemical Cycles and Environmental Transfers
- Climate and Cycles – Modeling their variability and interactions
Each of these themes brings together between 4 and 7 research teams organized around common tools and/or research topics.
The Experimental Atmospheric Chemistry (EAC) team is part of Theme 2 and specializes in measuring the levels of reactive chemical compounds present in the lower atmosphere in gaseous or particulate form, with potential impacts on health (air quality), ecosystems and, more generally, the climate. It is particularly interested in quantifying and characterizing their sources, properties and the physico-chemical processes that cause them to evolve.
The team relies on a large experimental park to carry out observatory measurements (SIRTA station, see "instrumental devices" section) and measurements during field campaigns in contrasting environments (from polar to urban). The main compounds studied are ozone, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, ammonia, aerosols (chemical composition and physical properties) and bio-aerosols (pollen, fungal spores and bacteria).
In 2012, the CAE team set up and manages, in collaboration with INERIS, an observatory for the measurement of reactive gaseous compounds and (bio)aerosols located at LSCE, on the Saclay plateau. This observatory is part of the European research infrastructure ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds and TRace reactive gases research InfraStructure) and constitutes the "in-situ" measurement zone of the SIRTA observatory (see description in IPSL).
Also, as part of ACTRIS, the team and its partners (INERIS, LAMP) are responsible for the European Aerosol Chemistry Calibration Center (ACMCC, https://acmcc.lsce.ipsl.fr/doku.php) co-located at LSCE.
