SAFIRE - UMS 2859
SAFIRE is a Unité Mixte de Service that brings together the human and financial resources and three research aircraft from CNRS, Météo-France and CNES.
SAFIRE uses its three research aircraft to carry out scientific measurement campaigns in the following main fields: atmospheric physics and chemistry, continental surfaces, ocean surfaces, aeronautical research and technology (e.g. study of in-flight icing or condensation trails).
SAFIRE has 3 main objectives:
- Acquire observations in different parts of the globe and at different levels in the atmosphere during field campaigns to increase our knowledge of the physical and chemical processes governing the Earth system and its fluid envelopes.
- Lead calibration/validation campaigns for new satellite-borne instruments and for instrument concepts prefiguring future space missions
- Participate in aeronautical R&D projects.
SAFIRE is based at Toulouse-Francazal airport (Cugnaux) and has a branch office in Meudon, near Paris.
SAFIRE is also a member of the European research aircraft consortium EUFAR, which aims to promote airborne research in Europe and pool the aircraft fleet to offer these platforms to researchers who are not equipped or do not have access to a suitable aircraft.
Three aircraft are operated by SAFIRE:
- 1 twin-engine Piper Aztec (Piper) for low-level
flights up to FL100 (approx. 3,000 m altitude), - 1 ATR-42 twin turboprop (ATR) for low-level
flights up to FL250 (approx. 7,500 m altitude), - 1 Falcon20 (F20) twin-engine jet for low-level
flights up to FL410 (approx. 12,500 m altitude).
The main objective of the SAFIRE-data portal is to make all data resulting from airborne research accessible to researchers and the public at safire.aeris-data.fr.
