On October 12, 2023, APPA is organizing a half-day scientific conference as part of the events and initiatives surrounding the National Air Quality Day, entitled "Air pollution: the health aspect of urban climate policies?
This event will focus on 3 areas:
- The health benefits of air and climate measures
- Points to watch
- The need for new governance between ecological planning and environmental governance
The Cour des Comptes report presented to the public in December 2015 notes that "the objective of combating global warming and the measures negotiated at international level to combat greenhouse gas emissions have indeed been given top priority. And this issue of global warming, which is essential in the long term, has paradoxically overshadowed the public health problem posed in the shorter term by air pollution".
Overall, reducing the use of fossil fuels has beneficial effects on the health of residents, and virtuous solutions generating air/health/climate "co-benefits" do exist (e.g. reducing motorized mobility, greening cities). However, controversy abounds, and the solutions put forward are often contradictory between planning, management and protection, and soft and hard methods of protection.
