LATMOS - UMR 8190
The Laboratoire Atmosphères, Milieux, Observations Spatiales is a joint research unit specializing in the study of fundamental physico-chemical processes governing terrestrial and planetary atmospheres and their interfaces with the surface, ocean and interplanetary environment.
LATMOS is a laboratory with a strong instrumental component that develops :
- A major activity in the design and production of innovative instruments used from ground stations, aircraft, balloons or satellites;
- Recognized activity and expertise in the analysis of observations of the Earth, planets and heliosphere from space (involvement in space missions such as ENVISAT/GOMOS, ENVISAT/SAR, METOP/IASI, TRMM, CLOUDSAT/CALIPSO, MEGHA-TROPIQUES, SMOS, CFOSAT, SOLSPEC, SPICAM, SPICAV, PICARD, SOHO, etc.);
- An activity based on ground-based observation networks or systems (international measurement networks, notably the NDACC network for monitoring atmospheric composition in the upper atmosphere, and the European GEOMON project);
- Active participation in international field campaigns (AMMA, SCOUT-O3, POLARCAT, etc.), using ground and airborne instrumentation;
- Studies in planetary atmospheric simulation chambers (PAMPRE).
In addition, skills and research in numerical modelling and simulation are being developed to support this experimental research:
- Numerical modeling of atmospheric physics and chemistry, used as an essential integrating tool for analyzing observations, studying observed processes, and studying climate/atmospheric chemistry relationships;
- Physical and numerical modeling of interactions between electromagnetic waves and the natural environment;
- Statistical modeling of the natural environment;
- Numerical simulation of physical processes in solar system plasmas.

LATMOS specializes in active and passive optical instrumentation (optical spectrometers, lidars), microwave instruments (radars, radiometers), gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and electric field measurement. In addition, research projects involving numerical modeling and simulation are developed in support of experimental research.
This technical know-how is underpinned by engineering expertise in electronics, optics, mechanics and IT, as well as project management, quality management and integration and testing.
It also relies on a range of resources and technical platforms housed at the OVSQ site, enabling the production of mechanical sub-assemblies and glassware, and assembly, integration and qualification operations in harsh environments (vacuum and vibration).
