Since 1997, the LNE's public service mission has been set out in a contract of objectives signed every four years with the French government. This involves a financial commitment from the State in the form of annual subsidies which enable the laboratory :
- to be the national reference laboratory for industrial metrology;
- pursue its scientific and technical development to anticipate new measurement and testing needs arising from technological developments and society's new expectations in the fields of safety, health, quality and environmental protection;
- provide technical assistance to public authorities and economic players in drawing up new regulations and standards at international, European and national level, developing new testing methods, and monitoring the market.
At LNE, the subject of air quality is addressed by the Gas and Aerosol Metrology Department, part of the Chemistry/Biology Division.
LNE is headquartered in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
In addition to its Paris headquarters, LNE operates facilities across France in Trappes, Poitiers, Saint-Étienne and Nîmes.
